Atlanta, Ga. (February 26, 2014) – With preseason training camp kicking off this weekend, the Atlanta Silverbacks are rounding out their roster with some final additions. The Silverbacks have signed former Toronto FC midfielder Junior Burgos to a contract, the club announced Wednesday, pending league and USSF approval.

Burgos comes to Atlanta after last playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Toronto FC. The Canadian outfit selected Burgos in the third round of the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, and eventually signed him to a contract shortly thereafter. The San Fransisco Bay Area native would go on to make 12 total appearances across all competitions for Toronto FC, taking the field in CONCACAF Champions League, Amway Canadian Cup, and league play.

"I want to thank the entire Silverbacks organization, especially Eric Wynalda, Ricardo Montoya, and Andy Smith, for having faith in my abilities,” Burgos said. “I look forward to starting this new chapter in my career, and I can’t wait to try and help our team achieve its goal of winning a league title."

Although raised in the U.S., Burgos represents El Salvador at the international level. He has been called into three different national team camps, including a few leading up to CONCACAF World Cup qualifying matches, but has yet to earn his first cap. Burgos’ father, Efrain, played for the El Salvador national team and now serves as the manager of Salvadoran first division side CD FAS.

“Junior is a very talented player that just needs an opportunity to reestablish himself,” said Silverbacks Technical Director Eric Wynalda. “He has been involved with the El Salvador national team before, and we expect him to be a big part of their plans moving forward, which is a fantastic achievement.”

Born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, Burgos grew up in San Bruno, California. He started his college career at San Jose State University before transferring to Cal Poly, where he was discovered by MLS scouts. While in college, the 5-foot-11 midfielder played for a trio of PDL sides: San Francisco Seals, Bakersfield Brigade, and Chicago Fire Premier.

Burgos, 25, will join his new teammates in Atlanta this Saturday for the start of preseason training camp. He will wear jersey number 33. The Silverbacks kick off the 2014 NASL season on the road, visiting the New York Cosmos on April 13. To purchase tickets for the 2014 season, call the Silverbacks Ticket Office at 404-969-4900.
