NASLLive.com To Offer Free Open Cup Streams
Soccer fans around the world will be able to watch the North American Soccer League (NASL) teams quest for the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (#NASLTheCup) as two matches of the upcoming Fourth Round involving NASL sides against Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs on Saturday, June 14, will be shown on www.NASLLive.com. The winner of the annual single-elimination tournament will also qualify as one of the four U.S. representatives to the CONCACAF Champions League.
Atlanta Silverbacks will host last year's Open Cup Finalists Real Salt Lake of MLS at Silverbacks Park at 8 pm ET, while Carolina RailHawks welcome CD Chivas USA at WakeMed Soccer Park. Fans who have never experienced the NASL will have a free opportunity to view these highly anticipated matches.
"The US Open Cup is a competition all of our players and fans relish," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. "We'd rather not be playing during the World Cup and our break, but be assured our teams will show up to play and win, and our fans will support their efforts. We love this tournament, it's a great opportunity for so much of the country to get involved and support their teams."
The Silverbacks advanced to the Fourth Round following a 5-0 blanking on the road of NPSL's Chattanooga FC last month and are taking on Real Salt Lake for the second consecutive year at the Open Cup. In that last meeting the MLS side posted a 3-2 victory after extra time against Atlanta at Sandy's Rio Tinto Stadium on May 28, 2013.
"First and foremost, we're extremely excited for our fans to have the opportunity to see their Silverbacks play against a Major League Soccer team at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. We obviously want as many fans as possible in the stadium for our game against Real Salt Lake, but for those that can't make it, we're glad that they will have the ability to watch a high-quality broadcast of the game live online," said Silverbacks President & GM Andy Smith
"On the field, this is a tremendous chance for our players to play against a team that made it all the way to the U.S. Open Cup Final last year. Real Salt Lake is always a strong team, and they present us with a big challenge. That being said, we look at this as an opportunity to showcase the caliber of players in our team. We're not just looking to hang with a MLS team - we're looking to win."
Also on Saturday, the RailHawks, who eliminated USL PRO's Charlotte Eagles in Third Round, will put their 21-game home unbeaten streak on the line as they face Chivas USA for a second year in the row at the oldest cup competition in the United States. Along with NASLLive.com, the encounter will also be shown locally on WRAL2 TV and on radio at 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio.
In the previous encounter on June 12, 2013, Carolina topped Chivas USA 3-1 in overtime to secure its place into the tournament's quarterfinals.
"The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is a very important competition to this organization," said Curt Johnson, RailHawks President. "Hosting these matches is great for our organization and highlights the Triangle's soccer community, our fans and WakeMed Soccer Park. We look forward to hosting Chivas USA and broadcasting the match locally on WRAL2, via the web on NASLLive.com and on 99.9 The Fan ESPN Radio."
The remaining NASL teams competing in the 101st edition of the Open Cup are the New York Cosmos hosting New York Red Bulls (MLS) at Hofstra University's James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday. The U.S. Soccer Federation has deemed this the "Game of the Round" and will be streamed on ussoccer.com.
On Tuesday, June 17, Indy Eleven travels to face Columbus Crew (MLS) at University of Akron's First Energy Stadium and then San Antonio Scorpions visit FC Dallas (MLS) at Toyota Stadium.
Rounding out the #NASLTheCup will be on Wednesday, June 18 as NASL Spring Champion Minnesota United FC heads to Sporting Park to meet last year's MLS Cup winner Sporting Kansas City.
Fourth Round winners of the U.S. Open Cup will progress to the Fifth Round (Round-of-16) which is set for June 24-25. The tournament final is scheduled for September 30-October 1
In only their third year at the U.S. Open Cup, the NASL teams have outscored their opposition 73 to 49 in 36 total games while posting a 20-2-14 overall record along with 11 shutouts.
