Atlanta, GA ( July 10th, 2018 ) – The Atlanta Silverbacks Football Club clinched the second overall seed in the NPSL Southeast Conference over the weekend and is preparing to host one of two semifinals Thursday in Atlanta. As the second second, Atlanta will host the highest remaining seed while top seeded Chattanooga FC will host the lowest remaining seed.
The Silverbacks will host New Orleans Jesters, Inter Nashville FC, or Asheville City SC. The sixth seed Georgia Revolution would automatically earn a date with Chattanooga FC Thursday night should they get a win Tuesday in New Orleans. We take a look at tonight’s two quarterfinal matchups and how they may play out.
Georgia Revolution FC at New Orleans Jesters
Kickoff: 8:00 PM EDT / Pan-American Stadium ( New Orleans, LA ) / Broadcast: MyCujoo
2018 Results: 3-1 Jesters in New Orleans (June 2nd), 2-1 Jesters in McDonough (June 8th)
Georgia Revolution: The Revs began the season with five straight unbeaten matches and an early lead at the top of the table. That came crashing down as their next four matches alternated meetings between the Silverbacks and these New Orleans Jesters. Four straight losses at a combined score of 13-4 brought the Revs back down to Earth and in the thick of the race to the postseason. The Revolution rebounded since that stretch, even earning a rare road win against Chattanooga FC on June 23rd. A win Tuesday send the Revs back to Chattanooga Thursday night in the semifinals.
New Orleans Jesters: A year that showed so much promise for the defending regular season conference champions has given way to inconsistent play for the purple and green. The Jesters earned four of six points against Chattanooga FC and Inter Nashville, but were also swept by Atlanta and dropped their final two matches to lose the second seed. There is no doubt injuries have played a factor in the inconsistent play for the Jesters. Given that, it would not be wise to count out Coach Farrell and his talented squad going forward. A win Tuesday send the Jesters to Atlanta Thursday night in the semifinals.
Asheville City SC at Inter Nashville FC
Kickoff: 8:30 PM EDT / Int’l Indoor Soccer Complex ( Nashville, TN ) / Broadcast: ACSC
2018 Results: 5-1 Inter in Nashville (June 16th), 2-0 City in Asheville (June 19th)
Asheville City SC: Decision Day in the NPSL Southeast was a large test for the second-year club from the western Carolinas. After three straight losses (Greenville FC x 2, New Orleans Jesters), Asheville City’s grasp on a playoff spot had slipped. They earned a gutsy 2-1 win on the road in New Orleans Saturday night to sneak in whilst pulling the Jesters down from a first-round bye. It has been an up-and-down season for the Blues, and do not expect that to stop Tuesday night. It should be a tough and even affair in the Music City, despite Asheville’s lopsided loss their earlier this season.
Inter Nashville FC: While Decision Day was taxing on most teams, the pressure felt by the defending conference champions was monumental. With Asheville leading New Orleans and Nashville trailing Greenville, Inter was sitting on the outside looking in during the second half of their regular season finale. A valiant rally to defeat Greenville FC 3-2 simultaneously lifted Nashville to the postseason and stole a spot from the visitors in their inaugural season. It will take grit and unbreakable will like this to defeat Asheville City Tuesday night and replicate their magical 2017 run.
